The Flight of Gemma Hardy by Margot Livesey

In this evocative retelling of Jane Eyre, Gemma Hardy is orphaned at a young age and leaves her native Iceland to move in with a beloved uncle in Scotland.  After his death her cruel aunt turns her into the family’s scullery maid.  Miserable at home she is eager to begin life at boarding school but suffers an equally harsh fate there.  As a young adult her life (finally!) begins to show promise when she is hired as an au pair for Nell, the wild niece of the mysterious Mr. Sinclair at his estate on the Orkney Islands.
