As the writer Anne Lamott said, December “is a month of Mondays” and I wholeheartedly agree. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays I find it difficult to finish a novel (even one I may really be enjoying) without getting bogged down in the middle due to constant interruptions—which is why I exclusively read short stories between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. My favorite collection of this year is One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories by B.J. Novak. Well written, funny, and incredibly clever without a hint of pretentiousness—I found the stories to be entertaining and engaging. It’s no surprise that this and Novak’s children’s title, The Book with No Pictures will be gifts to several readers in my life this holiday season.
